Sutton Collection was completed in late 1929 by Blum Brothers , who were of French Jewish Heritage. They studied architecture in Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and Columbia University in late 1800. They contributed a lot in NYC Art Deco building landscape. Their famous work include The Gramercy House, The Gramont, The Phaeton. One of their distinctive features was the way they built facades. They used mosaic tile, art tile, very elongated Roman brick and sinous panels of terra cotta. Their copper work and ironwork cannot be found in any catalogue.
Sutton Collection is famous for its clinker brick façade that was very popular in Europe. Clinker bricks are denser and heavier than regular bricks and give more durable quality, which also gives this rustic look of European stone houses.
There are copper plated elevators that give rich medieval look and the ironwork throughout the building is quite unique. A hallway that connects 405 and 404 buildings is finished with handmade stained glass, that was designed in NYC by European glassmaker in 1920ties. The interior lobby looks like a castle.
Sutton Collection has about over 500 units and its residents over the years have included Georgia O'Keeffe, a great modernist artist, Alfred Steiglitz, a famous photographer, Van Johnson, famous movie star, Noel Coward, a famous British play writer, composer, actor.
Sutton Collection continues to be in demand for calling it home. It offers very spacious lay outs and generous closet space, beamed ceilings, fireplaces, 24/7 front desk, and laundry facility.
